March 2009 Letter to Friends and Clients. In response to our January Letter to Friends and Clients we received several questions related to California property taxes and retirement plans in light of the economic downturn and state and federal legislation recently adopted. The interest was so strong that we thought it worth sending a follow-up letter on these points. This March 2009 letter includes several suggestions for reducing property taxes, strategies where you might want to deliberately trigger a reassessment, and a checklist of property tax exemptions and exclusions. It also reports the bad news that the two property tax assistance programs for seniors and disabled persons have been nixed in the recent state budget legislation. (Our January 2009 letter which more generally dealt with the economic downturn and various trust, estate and tax issues may be viewed here.)
